Why?

I swear I have tried to teach my children the best I know how. Specifically I am talking about cleaning up after themselves. Everything in their room has a specific home, and Chloe and Cassidy can tell you exactly where everything goes. However, they seem to have too much fun playing to ever clean up! Yesterday morning there room was pretty much clean when their grandparents left here. But by the time we went up to get ready for bed, it looked like a tornado had struck again. Last night I even refused to go in and sing them songs for bedtime because I said I wouldn't step foot in their room again until it was clean. Seriously, I don't get it. I've tried bribing even...I told them that if there room was clean at bedtime, I would give them each money to put in their new piggy banks. I then told them that the next time I went into their room, anything that wasn't put away would be put in a box, and would be sent to the attic. I haven't gone in their room yet since this box threat because I don't want to have to follow through, and I ALWAYS follow through. I just don't know what else to do. I guess I just have to box it all up. But I don't know if even that would teach them a lesson. I get so frustrated by this. I know kids can be messy, but my kids really do know how to clean. They are always cleaning at other people's houses, so why not their own??? Currently I am in a state of near exploding. I try to stay calm, but I know I will just burst at something else. My patience is definitely running thin at the moment. How many ways can I say that I am going crazy? I just HATE messes!

That is definitely frustrating. I too like to always have things clean. The thing that usually helps us to keep things picked up is: a rule to only have 1 or 2 things out at a time and to have mini pick-up sessions during the day (i.e. they have to pick up before before eating lunch, before watching a movie, before going to a friend's house, etc.)

Want to try teaching my kids for me? I have apparently failed at that rule!
